Biography
|
I am a native of Portland, Oregon, and have spent my adult life in Sausalito, California, Lahaina, Maui, the Oregon Coast, Palau, Pohnpei, Micronesia and now live in Hilo, Hawaii. I have studied in Portland, Oregon, San Francisco and Maui, and have traveled extensively around the world including many exotic locations in the Pacific. As a result, my art reflects my experiences and observations of different cultures, people and places, as depicted using my own unique artistic styles. I especially appreciate Pacific island cultures and my works emphasize tropical images, especially those of Micronesia and Hawaii. I have spent many hours in the great art museums of the world including the Musée d' Orsay, the Louvre, the Hermitage, etc., and have an extensive collection of art books. I have been influenced by many great artists, and especially my favorite, Henri Matisse, by the legendary Hollywood art director and artist, the late John Beckman, and by my dear friend and mentor, the late Jorge Unwin. My works have been displayed in Maui and Palau, and I have taught students in Micronesia. The museum quality canvas prints displayed on my web site site are derived from originals which are acrylic (and some multimedia) on canvas and were created from 1985 to 2007.

I specialize in large format colorful tropical scenes and symbolic images. My acrylic paintings reflect elements of Fauvism, Abstract Expressionism, Art Naif and Art Brut, but I try to implement a diversity of unique styles.
