Biography
|
Jane was born in New England. She started drawing before she could walk and spent her favorite childhood times in nature and in the garden discovering the images that would underscore the theme of her artwork throughout her life.
She received her Bachelor's degree in 1970 from the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design after spending her senior year in Italy in the European Honor Program. A post graduate graduate degree in art and design followed from the Academia di Perugia in Italy. A further year was spent at the renowned `Atlier 17' studying print-making techniques under Stanley William Hayter (1903 - 1988) in Paris, France.
Jane remained in Europe for several years where she exhibited her paintings in the Galleria Lancillotto, La Galleria Marianne, Il Segno (in Italy), Arte (Bonn, Germany) and other galleries as well as writing songs and illustrating album covers for the major music studio La Ricordi.
`Discovered' by a music publisher, Jane was brought to London, England where she continued writing and performing original songs - winning the Grand Prize for the Best Song at the Yamaha International Song Festival (now the European International Song Festival) with co-writer, Peter Yellowstone. When she moved to England, her paintings and etchings were shown in a number of galleries including The Blackheath Gallery, The Upper Street Gallery, Arc, and the Islington Gallery in London. Jane also worked on illustrating children's books and commercial illustration.
Since moving back to the United States in the late 1970's, in addition to painting, publishing and displaying her work, she has taught private art classes and courses at Boston College and the San Diego Community Colleges among other venues. She's also been involved with art psychology research, produced projects involving writing and illustrating entertaining seminar presentations, drawing illustrations for magazines and newspapers, cartooning and creating the occasional pet portrait. Her paintings have been shown in galleries from Boston, Massachusetts to Los Angeles, California.
Jane Schwartz Gates continues to paint, draw, illustrate and cartoon. She is one of the featured artists in `100 Artists of the West Coast II` released in late 2009 by Schiffer Publishing Ltd., PA and available in all major book stores and on the Internet. Her original paintings are currently represented by the Orlando Gallery in Los Angeles, CA.
