Biography
|
Background: Theriot graduated from L.S.U. in Baton Rouge in 1983 with a degree in Fine Art, where he considers some of his instructors, Ann Harding, Ed Pramuck and Robert Warrens, to have had an influence on the direction of his work. For historical influences, he is drawn to the mastery of Michelangelo, Keith Haring, Max Beckman and Pablo Picasso. At his first New York exhibition in1986, an article in the New York Native referred to Theriot's work as "Matissey". In a 1987 review of his first One Man exhibition in Baton Rouge the Louisiana State Times reporter referred to his work as "Picasso-like",
From 1985 to 1993 Theriot maintained an art studio in the Meat Packing District of New York and from 1993 to 2000 his studio was in the Faubourg Marigny of New Orleans. Currently he works form his studio in Orlando.
Theriot's artwork has been exhibited in Orlando, New Orleans, New York, Washington D.C. and Baton Rouge.

Statement
|
The Process: Using the subconscious (mind) to start the paintings, or "no pre-conceived" idea, Theriot begins the process by splattering, dripping, and slapping paint onto many surfaces at once in an expressionist manner, creating a primordial type of imagery and energy. The application of paint is a balance between aggressive and nurturing, and creates what he believes to be a form of true, real expression.
He returns to the pieces to search out conscious recognizable images and/or figures. The goal is to make the primordial imagery and energy (i.e. abstract shapes, colors, lines) more accessible to the viewer and create art that will draw the viewer into the "expression" of the artwork.
If the primordial imagery communicates clearly he completes the process without recognizable images, offering a non-literal revelation to the viewer.
