Biography
|
The pictoral creation of Diego Manuel is divided into thematic series: "Ciudades" (Cities), "Naturalezas Muertas" (Still Lifes) "Automoviles" (Cars) and "Animales y Plantas" (Animals and Plants) among others. He basically uses acrylic, although a significant part of his work is rendered in gouache.
He doesn't look for direct chromatic contrast, but uses a certain harmony in which can be found a variety of tones, giving life to the vital essence they represent, in the sense of an enjoyment of their consistency without excessive abuse of the concept. In effect, he recreates them while representing them. The result is an expressive body of work, symbolic, ironic, representing a certain multiplicity of proposals that bear specific themes, from still life, to the one dedicated to car emblems like Cadillac, to others where irony predominates, as in the case of "Retratos" (Portraits).
His allegorical and symbolic capacity is expressed in "Ciudades" where he personalizes the distinct urban zones in which the witnesses to the march of time realize their lives: the places where they are born sell out and die. This series has a certain comic ascendancy, although at the same time, influences of the new representation are found along with a clear dedication to fantasy, in which everything seems to fit. Overall, his definition of the image has more to do with his own concept and his life's experience with respect to a chosen city that defines its own characteristics.
In "Automoviles", he is interested in glamour, within a pop attitude, seeking the emblematic, such as is found in the specific nomenclature that makes up the forms of the cars. That is, the automobile as tool that drives us to beauty in a world where reality has its base in modernity. Without a fixed cult devoted to the car, there is no coherent life. In that vein, in "Animales y Plantas" his personages have a postmodern mood, expressive and symbolic, that links as much to the cities as to the cars. He tries to come up with an aesthetic that is completely based in the contemporary, subject to glamour and the potential of the image, such as it is.
In "Retratos", he configures a universe full of individuals in which each one has its own personality and a capacity to laugh at oneself.
