These basic houses featured double-pitched hipped roofs and were surrounded by porches (galleries) to handle the hot summer climate.

In the french caribbean, most of these colonial houses had the same infrastructure and allowed such great evening for their owners and large families... friends and relatives till late evening..

The edifice was designed by a french architect  in a Baroque style. Built in Paris in 1889 for the Paris Exposition by the Eiffel Tower, architect : Henri Pick. 

This impressive building is  Victor Schoelcher Library building that was moved in 1893 from the Tuileries, near the Arc de Triomphe du Carousel in France, to its present location nowadays, in the France's territory of Martinique (Caribbean).
