Richard L. Matteson Jr. is a nationally recognized guitarist, artist and author. He has written and illustrated ten nationally and internationally acclaimed books by Mel Bay Publications in Pacific, Missouri. Currently Richard teaches guitar and other music lessons at Mom's Music and leads the music for the contemporary service at Highland United Methodist Church.
Artistic Direction: His new series of ten paintings based on traditional American songs begun in 2006, portents a new direction in his art career. Called The Bluegrass Series, the lyrics of the song are engraved on the canvas in small print and the painting depicts the story of the song. Matteson's goal is to paint a large number of music song paintings in the next several years.
Another new group of paintings entitled, The Driftwood Series, was begun early in 2007. The forms suggested by driftwood have come to life. Sometimes Matteson uses close-ups of the tree grain to create new worlds of form and life. He has completed over a dozen driftwood paintings in 2007 and 2008.
Matteson has started professionally reproducing his paintings so they can be purchased at a reasonable price by art patrons. The ten paintings in his Bluegrass Series have been reproduced on a high quality photopaper with foam core backing. Richard plans to launch his art web-site soon.
Style: Matteson's calls his realistic painting style neosurrealism (new surrealism). Following the trail blazed by Salvador Dali and Rene Magritte, Matteson has produced many thought producing paintings from large serious works (Heaven, Bipolar and Hell) to lighter music based song paintings (Froggie Went A-Courtin').
Background: Matteson was born into an artist and musical family; his great uncle being the late Richard Lofton, an accomplished painter from Carmel, Ca. After studying art in college, Matteson taught art in Beaufort, SC as well as music. He supported himself through art and music until his music career became his main source of income.
Matteson has shown his work in Beaufort, SC at a National Gallery Gallery in Easton MD and Winston-Salem, NC. Beside some commissions and illustrations, Matteson is painting in relative obscurity. Matteson currently resides in Louisville, KY.
