riccardo liotta

Biography
my name is riccardo liotta. i was born in rome, italy, and moved to the united states in 1991. i attended college at the university of wisconsin-milwaukee and graduated with a master in architecture. i have always had two passions in life: art and science. as a child i used to draw extensively, especially comics and funny characters. music also interested me. as i grew, my interest in art grew as well, but shifted toward abstract art. science fascinated me, especially mathematics. these two life-long passions are still alive. today, i practice as an architect and spend my free time making art and studying physics and mathematics. these fields have become intrinsic, complementary to one another. i constantly try to combine them together, making art out of architecture and architecture a piece of art. mathematics and physics are the foundations of this very experimental, analytical and scientific mechanism.

Statement
because of my professional training, most of my work is inspired by architecture and, in fact, represents buildings and structures. however, my main inspiration comes from physics and mathematics, fields that fascinate me and which are the foundation of my architectural work. in the past two years, in fact, my focus has increasingly shifted to artwork less reminiscent of buildings and more of particle physics and quantum mechanics concepts. by combining these subjects with the theories and techniques of the constructivism, suprematism, futurism, and rayonnism styles, i have developed what i call the eigencompositions: analytical, abstract artwork consisting of simplified yet very dynamic geometrical shapes and lines that convey concepts of movement, velocity, decay, fragmentation. these eigencompositions stem from shapes randomly generated through a systematic process and symbolize particle trajectories, fragmentation of nature, uncertainty and undeterminability of life. i find acrylic to be the medium that best expresses my ideas and theories. however, i also work with colored pencils and pastels. i also extensively utilize the computer to generate images and to alter/enhance paintings and drawings.
