Walter Chop

Biography
Walter Chop was born in Bridgeport, Conn. In 1949. As a child he was a voracious drawer. He took a few painting classes in college, although his major was English. After graduation from college in 1971, Walter moved to Boston where he began painting as a hobby. He took a figure drawing course at the Museum of Fine Arts School. At this time the subject matter of his paintings and drawings assumed the form of Abstract and Expressionistic Faces and Figures, as well as some landscapes. In January of 1973, Walter moved to New Orleans. While there, he studied figure Drawing with a local artist. Returning to Boston in the Fall of 1973, Walter continued dabbling in art-painting with acrylics and drawing with pencil, pen and ink. A fire in 1975 destroyed a number of his paintings. During the mid 70s he exhibited in the annual Stratford, Connecticut art show. Walter married in 1979 and moved to Maine. For the next 18 years he continued to sketch occasionally but did no paintings. In March 1997, Walter once again begun to paint. This time in oils, and with a passion! His current subject matter consists primarily of abstract work portraying faces and figures. He has also painted landscapes and seascapes. Walter has exhibited works at Art Works Gallery in Brunswick and Little Sebago Gallery in North Windham. He has, as part of The Portland Life Drawing Group, exhibited at The Three Fish Gallery in Portland. Other gallery showings include: Maine Art Gallery in Wiscasset, Eleven Pleasant St. in Brunswick and Maine Street Art in Brunswick He is currently a member of The Bowdoinham Drawing Group which meets weekly. He lives in Brunswick with his wife and three children.
