Artist Statement
As an artist, I aspire to create a narrative between style and subject. My body of work centers upon standard architecture with an abstract twist. This style of painting is not meant to be mathematically or visually precise but rather one of looseness energy and movement. With this in mind, I enjoy recreating historical events and literary figures. My goal is to illustrate these stories and events within one canvas that needs no explanation-the painting itself tells the entire story.
I draw upon the works of mid-20th century regional artists, such as Thomas Hart Benton and Grant Wood for their ability to capture movement and energy within their stylized works. For storytelling ability, I am inspired by Norman Rockwell as few artists have been able to combine storytelling with flawless illustrative technique.
My works are somewhat dark and moody in terms of subject and as well as in execution. I am drawn to traditional stories that are supernatural but classic, for example, Washington Irving's, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Nathaniel Hawthorne's House of the Seven Gables. I enjoy the aura of mystery surrounding these stories and they are well suited to my style of painting.
By recreating these works of literature on canvas, hope to draw an audience who appreciates history and classical literature with my more modern painting technique. | | | | Exhibitions | | Jennifer M. Leiner
