Ted Grier

Biography
Hi, I'm Ted Grier. At one time or another, I have worked as longshoreman, bank teller, ship's cook, airline agent, sailor, photographer, graphics designer, yacht refinisher, and stone crab fisherman. My homes have been as various as my activities---Montreal, Toronto, London, Nassau, Bermuda, Florida Keys, Annapolis, and now the Eastern shore of Maryland. As the son and grandson of well-known Canadian artists--- Sir Wyly Grier, portrait painter of notables in the early 20th century, and Geoffrey Grier, landscape painter and portraitist--- I avoided art for years (as the young will do). When I finally took up my brushes over 40 years ago, all varieties of paint media attracted me: oils, watercolors, magic markers, pastels. I've enjoyed associations with the Juniper Island Art Association, the Broward Art Guild, Marathon Art Guild, Allied Artists of America, Goldcoast Watercolor Society, and Maryland Hall for the Performing Arts. I was privileged to study with Bob Gross (Fla) and Charlie Reid (Conn.) Most of the prints of historic buildings of Annapolis are featured at the Historic Annapolis Foundation Museum store.

Statement
This statement appears under "Historic Buildings of Annapolis", but can, with a few manipulations of nuance be applied to most of my painting. "Raise the windows, fling open the shutters! In Annapolis, the past lives with you. These old houses cast their memories with subtle moves. Maybe they're haunted. I try to picture citizens and denizens of previous lifetimes, in the surrounds, the faded openings, and I listen to their voices whispering in the garden's grasp. The watercolor is wet-on-dry, removed, or pressed for contrast. "I try to bring all these energies (voices, persons, brick, garden) to life.

Exhibitions
An article featuring some of my Annapolis watercolors appeared in "Capital Entertainment" (1/15/99). I've enjoyed associations with the Juniper Island Art Association, the Broward Art Guild, Marathon Art Guild, Allied Artists of America, Goldcoast Watercolor Society, and Maryland Hall for the Performing Arts.
