Lisa K. Walraven

Biography
Lisa K. Walraven was born in Los Angeles, California, soon after her family moved to the eastern states. She was raised in Ohio and was interested in birds, mammals, and nature all the while. Constantly, as a child she was doodling and drawing. She then took some art classes in high school. She graduated from the Ohio University with honors and a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree. She majored in painting, drawing and illustration. She has since illustrated children's books for teachers to use in the class room. For 7 years she worked in Wildlife Rehabilitation which eventually lead to bird banding positions in Arizona. There she resides in a small artist's community and paints the wonderful critters of the desert southwest. She is best known for her bird portraits. Most recently she has been experimenting in abstract pieces and continues to try out different subject matter. She has magnets, postcards, greeting cards, and t-shirts made from her designs.

Statement
Lisa's work is graphic & bold with strong line, happy colors, and the design is an important part of her work. The negative spaces are often the most interesting element in her work. Often times, the background patterns make an impact. Almost architechtural in nature, these particular pieces are mosaic-like. Although, they are stylized, the creatures she paints are correctly depicted. Birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts know what species of creatures or plants are being depcited. The beautiful southwest deserts and mountains and the critters that live there provide constant inspiration for her work.

Exhibitions
She shows her work in the Belleza Gallery, in Bisbee, Arizona, the Casa de San Pedro, a birder's B & B, in Hereford, Arizonza, the Ramsey Canyon Inn at Ramsey Canyon, Arizona, & the Chiricahua Art Gallery in Rodeo, New Mexico.
