Description: A little boy points out Ursa Major. I aspire to create a compelling narrative targeted toward the viewer's inner child. This nonlinear pictorial story is suffused with a feeling of wonder and a magical reality, a dreamy twilight realm. I want to suggest an implied story, one that is very personal- yet universal. My desire is to inject a sense of wonder, imagination and hope into our darkening world. I plan to create an entire narrative where each viewer tells their own story, and every picture stands on its own, yet works in conjunction with the others to compel and further the childlike warmth of such basics precepts as dancing, sharing, showing, caring and napping. Evoking classics like The Giving Tree, Where the Wild Things Are, Alice in Wonderland, and The Jungle book, I will meld storytelling in such a way as to take the viewer into a strange yet compelling and familiar world. Artists are not only mirrors of the world but also keepers of the soul, we must often work to not only editorialize current events and the sentiments of the masses, it is often our job to work as a counter balance. In a world of greed we need to give more then ever, in a world of pain it is our chance to console, and in a world of doubt and uncertainty it is our job to evoke hope and to remind our selves of the beautiful basics of humanity

Michael Orwick

Biography
Michael Orwick has pursued his interest in Art studying first at the University of Oregon and then completing his education at the Pacific Northwest College of Arts, where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Illustration, with a strong emphasis on Painting and Graphic Design. "To put on canvas what I see, perceive and feel has long been my goal as I work elements such as sound, smell, and memories into my art. If I can interpret and convey these intangibles on a subconscious level, then I feel successful and I get excited about what is basically a non-stop education." His style today tends to be a combination of tight and realistic representation with a painterly approach and impressionistic touch that adds passion and motion to the final pieces. Just under two years ago, Michael took the leap and quit his day job to do art full time. Setting up a studio in his home, he took on the company name Orwick Illustration and immediately started doing murals and contract work for various small companies, as well as portraiture for friends and neighbors. "I'm very lucky, I have a strong support base of people who believe in me, not to mention a very lovely and understanding wife." Over the past years time Michael has proved to be a focused artist with a strong work ethic. He enjoys developing inventive ideas and images through the information and input he gathers on all levels. He has freelance experience in advertising, children's literature, posters and portraiture. His work is displayed throughout the Portland metropolitan area.
