Stephen & Carol Hanson

Biography
Stephen Hanson Stephen grew up in Lindsborg, Kansas where, he played the usual games that young children play. Often, during these formative years, he found himself, alone with his imagination, picking up a pencil and drawing what he saw in nature and the world around him. Pursuing this interest in art, he attended Bethany College to learn more about his talent and interests. Then in 1978, he graduated from Bethany College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in art. During his college experience, he studied varied subjects from art history, ceramics, printmaking, drawing and painting. His greatest interests and strengths were in painting and drawing. Since his graduation, he has lived in Colorado Springs. He spends his time teaching children and teenagers how to appreciate and create art.

Statement
Stephen Hanson In the past, his subject matter has been primarily of Southwest imagery. However, recently he has discovered a new means of depicting various ancient architectural representations. In his collages, one may see Mayan, Assyrian, or Egyptian influences. The unique combinations of these ancient cultures with other textural and colorful surfaces, blend into a work of exceptional quality and offers endless possibilities. There are also Biblical and spiritual "themes" which he has painted. One may see Old Testament prophets, the "New and Old Jerusalem," or perhaps, a vision of "The Four Living Creatures," as seen in a rendition of Ezekiel's vision from the Bible. These paintings, offer the viewer a "prophetic glimpse" into the Spirit, and express the artist's strong beliefs and viewpoints.

Carol Hanson With a varied subject matter, two common threads run through Carol's work: One is a sensitive element of expressive color; the other, a strong sense of compositional design. Fascinated by the Fauves and Impressionists of the late 19th century, Carol's work with color, design and, most recently a playful twist on today's reality, suggest a new direction that brings visions of Hopper and other social commentaries to mind. Rich colors depict street scenes of Denver, that are intertwined with more traditional aspects of still life- making a subtle, and humorous comment about "life."
Forks and spoons become people, teapots rest on tall buildings, and flower arrangements stand in empty parking lots.
