Size: 21cm x 15cm (8.3 ins. x 5.8 ins.)

Description: On the edge of Salisbury Plain stand these awe-inspiring circles of towering stones, the most celebrated Neolithic and Bronze Age remains in England. The monument dates from between 2000 and 1400 B.C. It is difficult to imagine how men with only primitive tools could possibly have transported and erected these massive stones. Eighty of them came from the Prescelly Mountains in Wales. Stonehenge's origins and purpose are shrouded in mystery, but it seems it was built to calculate the annual calendar and seasons. Its axis is carefully aligned with the sunrise on 21st June, the longest day in the year. No wonder Thomas Hardy set the ending of his tragic novel "Tess of the D'Urbervilles" here amongst his "Temple of the Winds."

Alison Avery

Biography
Alison Avery was born in Barking, Essex and spent her childhood in Twickenham, Middlesex. She now lives in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey and is married with one son. Alison is self taught. Her pleasure in drawing and painting began as a child and has remained with her throughout her life. Her desire for perfection and detail has stayed constant, but naturally it has developed over the years, as her attention to detail has intensified. After many years of painting in oils, she turned her attention to drawing with pen and ink and now concentrates on this medium. Alison works mainly from her own photographs. She has travelled widely across the United Kingdom, from Lands End to the Shetland Islands. She has always loved walking with her family in the mountains, on the cliffs by the sea and in the country and she puts all her thoughts and feelings of these happy times into each piece of her art. Alison's mother provided her with constant encouragement and enthusiasm. Her work is dedicated to her cherished memory.
