Derek Langley

Biography
Born in 1955, I have been passionate about photography since the age of twelve, when I first began printing my own pictures. Growing up in Brighton, England, I would prowl the promenades in search of images, observing the seas in all their moods. Photography was deeply entwined with my personal development, a profoundly private activity. At the time, I felt that a career in photography would be impossible without compromise and loss of integrity, instead choosing to study Theoretical Physics as another way to examine the nature of reality. After graduating, I moved to Cambridge and worked for many years in computing, until in 1985 I finally began decided to devote myself full-time to photography.

Statement
Inspired by the teachings of Taoism, I regard myself and my camera as an instrument by which the Universe can look back at itself. In becoming absorbed in the process of seeing, I experience a feeling of communion with the World. This is reflected in a spiritual quality to much of my work, a sense of timeless mystery, of somehow 'seeing beyond'. Working mainly in monochrome, I print my own work; drawing inspiration from Kahil Gibrain's phrase 'Work is Love made Visible', I dedicate about eight hours in the darkroom to getting each new photograph as perfect as I can make it.

Exhibitions
My work has featured in Photo Art International, Photography Monthly, and Amateur Photographer, on a number of book covers, and been published as art posters by Image Conscious of San Francisco, as well as in an exclusive range of cards and calendars. I exhibit regularly at the All Saints Garden Arts and Craft Market in Cambridge. For further details, please see my website (http://www.darknessandlight.co.uk), where you can also see the full range of my work.
