Biography
|
Jo-Ann Garbutt was born and raised in the culturally rich and diverse country at the southern tip of Africa, South Africa. During her years of study at the Stellenbosch Art Center the young artist emerged as one of the most promising artists of her generation. Professors would praise her interesting approach to the use of color and the originality of her compositions, which defined her art.
During her travels to Europe and North America, she continued to refine her style and training - studying with Saeed Danosian. Jo-Ann has recently spent time in Houston and Vancouver, BC and exhibted her work in both locations.
An independent individualist and avid reader of psychology books, Jo-Ann draws a lot of her inspiration from the display of human emotion on faces in postures. The human figure occupies a central part in the artist's work and her work is populated with many symbolic portraits and figure studies. Their dramatic nature is emphasized by the innovative settings used by the artist.
