"Blackwater Falls",created by the artist, Charlotte Catlett Gerlach, from sketches and many photographs on location, as a commissioned oil painting, for a private collector. Blackwater Falls, Blackwater State Park, Davis, WV, in the scenic Potomac Highlands area of West Virginia. The "black" water is the result of tannic acid from fallen hemlock and red spruce needles. "Blackwater Falls", what a magnificent place ~ a little bit of heaven, for an artist with an eye for color and design and a desire to paint the scene. Several trips were made to the falls in order to find the right season, the correct lighting, enough water coming over the falls, etc., and the view Charlotte was determined to come up with for her painting. "I want the viewer to feel a sense of peace and calm when viewing my painting, as though he or she can actually hear the water roaring over the five stories high falls of the Blackwater River onto the rocks below, feel the cool breeze blowing through the trees, and hear the beautiful songs of the birds in the forest.", she said.
