Since the early 1950's Richard Fisher has been continually involved with visual arts: BA degree from Pennsylvania State University, fine arts major; MA degree from Columbia University, Teachers' College, fine arts major; Brooklyn Museum of Art, Oil Painting with Reuben Tam; Parsons School of Design, advertising curriculum; extensive professonal experience in textile design, packaging design graphics, corporate identitiy programs, and teaching Textile Design Graphics for 22 years at the Fashion Institute of Technology (State Univeristy of New York) in the Textile/Surface Design Department.
Through the exploration of various media and techniques, Fisher has developed his own unique approach to art and the creative processes. At the core of his work are drawing meditations, images rising from the unconscious mind. Inspired by Carl Jung, (the psychology of the mind), Anton Erhnesweig (the education of vision), Leonard da Vinci, (on creativity), and by artists such as Hieronymous Bosch, William Blake, Odilon Redon, Max Ernst, he explores the unconscious mind and calls his artwork: MINDWORKS.
MINDWORKS are a process of discovery, art put to the service of self-realization for the artist as well as the viewer.

Statement

Artist's statement: MINDWORKS are a meditative art... an exploration into the unconscious mind. It is necessary to have no preconceived ideas about what the work will be. I start with my mind in an 'idle' state, so to speak, kind of drifting, calm and relaxed. I put down a few smudges on paper with charcoal and unconscious ideas begin to appear. I read into these vague marks whatever images come to mind and then enhance them with more drawing. Associations occur and it is mostly a process of discovery and adventure. There is no need to control. Allowing is the key. It is very exciting; I let things happen - an advent. I try everything. I feel the media, enjoy the pull of the charcoal on the paper, the blackness and the sensitivity of the sharp point. As thoughts come to mind, I just let them flow. Things are happening on the paper: I observe them, respond, and move on. It is a drawing meditation. As one meditates on these images, thoughts, ideas and associations occur to the viewer as he explores his own unconscious mind. MINDWORKS are a process of discovery, art put to the service of self-realization, for the artist as well as the viewer.
